Sensodyne Science: Potassium Nitrate Formulations

Potassium nitrate formulations build protection over time to help desensitize nerves in tooth pulp3–6

Sensodyne potassium formulations contain 5% potassium nitrate. Potassium is an ingredient that is clinically proven to reduce dentine hypersensitivity:3–6

  • Potassium ions can travel into exposed dentine tubules
  • Build-up of potassium ions over time helps desensitize nerves in the tooth pulp, making them irresponsive to sensitivity stimuli
Dentine tubules and potassium nitrate

Potassium nitrate desensitizes nerve through the accumulation of potassium ions and reduces response to potential stimuli3–8

Potassium nitrate formulations work inside dentine to target the source of the sensitivity.3–8

Sensodyne Essential toothpaste: low abrasion formulas

Mean dentine loss bar chart

Specially formulated for sensitive teeth1

Exposed dentine is up to 10x softer than enamel and so needs to be treated with care. Sensodyne Essential toothpastes with potassium nitrate are low abrasion toothpastes, and have been shown in an in situ study to have a lower impact on dentine loss than toothpaste with moderate or high abrasivity.*9

Chart adapted from GSK data on file 20101*After 15 days of treatment The toothpaste with potassium nitrate is low abrasion
